A New Genre of Japanese Cuisine:
神恩和食 “Shinon Washoku”
In Japan, it has been long believed that everything in this world is both “a deity and a gift from the gods.” Eating, therefore, is an act of embracing life, partaking in the natural cycle, and receiving the “life” that sustains us.
Through the shared experience of consuming 御下がり”the offerings from the gods”—the sacred foods presented to the deities—we are reminded of the bonds we hold with our ancestors and nature, receiving these connections as “divine ties” to help us navigate the future.
Rooted in Japan’s ancient traditions, this concept is enriched through exchanges with diverse cultures around the world, fostering mutual understanding and harmony with all.
Purification of Ingredients
(Blessing)
Nishinomiya Shrine, the head shrine among 3,000 shrines dedicated to Ebisu, the deity of prosperity in business.
Ebisu is believed to bestow blessings such as business prosperity, abundant harvests, and bountiful catches. Every year, over one million people visit Nishinomiya Shrine during the Tōka Ebisu Festival to pray for success in their businesses. It is also renowned for the ritual of selecting the year’s “Lucky Man.”
Every month, chefs and staff visit Nishinomiya Shrine to pray and receive blessings. During their visit, they have the ingredients, knives, and auspicious items used at Shinon Washoku Senryū purified and blessed through a special prayer ritual conducted at the shrine.
It all begins with an encounter with the ingredients (life)
First, we invite our guests to connect with the life they are about to receive through their meal.
Encounter ingredients that are both “divine offerings” and “blessings from the gods,” and experience the cycle of nature.
A dialogue with nature and tools of divine grace.
Ingredients offered to the gods must be prepared in purity, free from any defilement.
With a forged blade and the refined skills of a master chef, ingredients are prepared with a spirit of reverence and prayer.
Through dedicated attention and harmonious dialogue with both ingredients and tools, we prepare the meal so that our honored guests may take with them the gift of a blessed connection.
The world-renowned masterpiece knife, “Sakai Takayuki,” crafted in collaboration with Aoki Hamono Seisakusho of Sakai and engraving artisan Miwa Kubota, embodies both precision and power. Adorned with a unique engraving exclusive to our divine Japanese cuisine, this exquisite blade radiates elegance and craftsmanship.
These masterfully crafted knives are available for viewing and purchase at our location. After your purchase, the knife will be ceremonially purified at a shrine before being delivered to you.
To ensure lasting enjoyment of your knife, we also offer maintenance services. Please feel free to consult us for care after your purchase.
